A study on the mental state of hemodialysis patients

Abstract
The purpose of this study was an attempt to provide fundamental information for effective nursing care and adequate nursing interventions to mental problems in hemodialysis patients.
The study was performed by analyzing the response of SCL-90(symptom check list-90) filled out by 60 patients receiving hemodialysis therapy and 32 patients with other chronic disease to compare the difference of mental state among patients group.
The results of he study were as follows:
1. Total mean score of hemodialysis patients were higher than the other chronic patients in overall, particularly, depression scale--was very significantly different (P<0.01).
2. In hemodialysis patient, response scores of male and female were similar to each other in general, particularly, female group was very significantly higher than male group in phobic anxiety(p<0.01).
3. In hemodialysis patient, response scores of patients group without occupation was higher than those of patients group with occupation in general, particularly, significantly different in somatization, obsessive, psychotism(p<0.05) and very significantly different in phobic anxiety(p<0.01).
4. In hemodialysis patients the higher income group the lower scores were recognized in general, significantly different in obsessive, depression and psychotism(p<0.05). particularly. In other chronic patients, the higher income groups, the higher scores were recognized in general very significantly different in hostility (p<0.01), Particularly.
5. In hemodialysis patient, difference in response scores between marital states was not recognized.
In other chronic patients, however, the scores of married ones were higher than nonmarried in general, particularly, significantly different in obsessive sensitivity, depression and phobic anxiety(p<0.05).
6. In hemodialysis patient, response scores of patients without religion were higher than those with religion, particularly, significantly different in depression (p<0.05).
